5th April 2009 : - 38 year old Austrian, Herbert Nitsch, who has been ranked the leading male free diver for the last 7 years, has taken the world record for free diving with a depth of 114 metres (374 feet) in only three minutes and forty seconds.
“It was my fourth attempt at this competition and whilst you don’t necessarily feel the pressure all the time because the event is over 11 days, after three fails I was beginning to let it get it to me. But today I had a good warm up and by the time I reached the rope I knew I was going to make it” said Nitsch.

The record was previously held at 113 metres by Frenchman Guillaume Nery, but today Nitsch broke that with an effortless performance in good time.
Herbert Nitsch has the most World Records ever held by a free diver and has won almost all the competitions. He won his last World Championship in November 2007 by a clear lead, descending to 112 meters, has held his breath over 9 minutes and has a depth record of 214 meters (700 feet) with a sled.

Herbert is being filmed on location in the Bahamas by under water film production company BlueEyeFX. Based in Egypt and headed by British born Deborah Metcalfe, BlueEyeFX is documenting all attempts at Vertical Blue 2009 – the invitational freediving competition held at Dean’s Blue Hole, Long Island, Bahamas.
